Estudió Antropología y luego ilustración, trabajando para National Geographic antes de dedicarse a sus propios libros. Reconocido por su estilo realista y su capacidad de unir ciencia e imaginación, también es autor de manuales de arte como Color and Light e Imaginative Realism.
