Masamune Shirow (pseudónimo de Masanori Ota, nacido en Kobe, 1961) es un influyente dibujante de manga japonés, pilar del género cyberpunk y la ciencia ficción. Estudió pintura al óleo en la Universidad de Artes de Osaka y comenzó su carrera en el ámbito dōjinshi con Black Magic.Alcanzó fama internacional con Appleseed (1985-1989), obra que ganó el premio Seiun, pero su consagración definitiva llegó con Ghost in the Shell (1989), un manga de culto que explora la inteligencia artificial, el existencialismo y la fusión humano-máquina, adaptado exitosamente al cine y la televisión. Otras obras destacadas incluyen Dominion y Orion.
