Combatió en la Primera Guerra Mundial y fue corresponsal en varios conflictos. Sus obras más célebres incluyen El viejo y el mar (Premio Pulitzer), Adiós a las armas y Por quién doblan las campanas, reconocidas por su estilo directo y su influencia en la literatura universal.
