This book redefines AI and human understanding by replacing the traditional but misleading notion of ‘mind’ with the innovative ecosystem of noémon systems. A large number of social animals exhibit artificiality (ability to create artefacts). For instance, ants have developed agriculture for at least 55 million years now. The uniqueness of human artificiality started with the establishment of written human language approximately 2,600 BCE. On this basis, human understanding gradually came to invent bureaucracies, mathematics, science, and, most recently, artificial intelligence (AI). 

Using noémon systems, this book also clarifies the critical, interconnected phenomena of communication, knowledge and consciousness. Using this, the book explores the impact of AI in science, the future of work and decision making and outlines how humans can use AI to enable us all to become happy members of a flourishing biosphere.The book is for the educated reader, political leaders, researchers, and graduate students.
