Reseña del libro "Before We Ever Said Hello (en Inglés)"

Before We Ever Said Hello follows Maya Bennett, a meticulous conservationist who has built her adult life around order, controlled environments, and the repair of damaged objects. Working in the restoration laboratory of the St. Jude Municipal Conservation Library, Maya finds comfort in materials that can be measured and stabilized. Paper can be torn, leather can split, and bindings can fail, but conservation gives damage a procedure. Human memory is different, and three years earlier Maya survived a traumatic coastal night that left a gap in her memory and changed the way she lived. Her controlled routine is disrupted when she receives an unexpected text from an unknown coastal number. The sender claims that Maya's phone number has been saved for three years and then reveals a private phrase she once used while repairing bindings: the spine always cracks where the glue dries too quickly. The message convinces Maya that the sender knows something from the missing period of her life. Suspicious and frightened, she begins investigating the number and her own history while her friend Nora Dawson tries to keep her grounded. The mystery draws Maya back toward the coastal community and the night she has deliberately buried. The evidence leads to Ethan Grant, a man connected to the same storm and railway disaster. Maya initially fears that Ethan may be manipulating her because he possesses knowledge she cannot consciously remember. The truth is more human: during the disaster three years earlier, Maya encountered Ethan when he was close to giving up his life. Her intervention helped him step back from the edge, and the two survived the night together amid darkness, freezing rain, damaged tracks, and isolation.Ethan kept Maya's number and a record of their encounter because she had asked him, in the chaos of that night, to make sure she was not forgotten. His messages are therefore the fulfillment of a promise made to the frightened woman he met during the storm. When Maya finally confronts the truth, she realizes that she does not need to recover every missing memory for the event to have meaning. The central metaphor of conservation becomes the emotional heart of the novel. Maya learns that restoration does not erase damage or recreate an object as though it had never been broken. A repaired structure can retain a visible seam and still remain strong enough to carry the future. At the coastal platform, Ethan gives Maya complete freedom to reject any relationship with him. Instead, she chooses to remain, accepting that her past may contain blank spaces while her present can still be lived fully. The novel closes with Maya and Ethan together as the storm gives way to dawn, transforming a night of survival into the beginning of an unwritten future.
