This book contains information on the residents of Charleston as derived from city directories of 1782, 1785, 1790, and 1794. The entries generally include the name and occupation of the head of the household."This study, except for the 1785 directory, has been divided by the occupations of the residents and then subdivided according to the year. Each chapter, except the last one, consists of two parts - an introductory essay and a listing of the residents whose occupation is included in the category which is covered by the chapter. If an individual is listed as having two occupations, such as printer and stationer, he is included in the chapter 'Craftsmen' as a printer and in the chapter 'Mercantile Community' as a stationer. ... The last chapter concerns the 1785 directory."Chapters include Craftsmen; Mercantile Community; Planters and Farmers; Teachers; Tavernkeepers, Innholders, Boardinghouses, Etc.; Church Officials; Medical Community; Vendue Masters and Auctioneers, Legal Community, Ship Masters, Pilots, Mariners, and Seamen; Civil and Military Officials; Other Residents: 1782, 1790, and 1794; 1785 Residents. A Glossary, Bibliography, and a full-name index add to the value of this work.
