The subject of this book is the life of the Mexicans-the Mexica, as they said themselves-at the beginning of the sixteenth century. At that time, in the early 1500s, nobody, from the arid steppes of the north to the burning jungles of the isthmus, from the coast of the Gulf of Mexico to the shore of the Pacific, could have believed that this enormous empire, its culture, its art, its gods, were to go down a few years later in a historic cataclysm. The period with which this book is concerned is distinguished from all others by the wealth of its written documentation. The Mexicans were interested in themselves and in their history; they were tireless speech-makers and great loves of verse, thus an immense quantity of books and legal documents came into being. Drawing on this rich recorded history, Soustelle creates a memorable portrait of Aztec society.

Jacques Soustelle fue un antropólogo, etnólogo y político francés nacido el 3 de febrero de 1912 en Montpellier, Francia, y fallecido el 6 de agosto de 1990 en Neuilly-sur-Seine. Es reconocido principalmente por sus investigaciones sobre las culturas mesoamericanas, especialmente la civilización mexica (azteca). Desde joven mostró interés por la historia, la filosofía y la antropología, áreas en las que desarrolló una destacada trayectoria académica.

Soustelle estudió en la École Normale Supérieure y posteriormente se especializó en etnología. Durante la década de 1930 realizó investigaciones en México, donde estudió la organización social, la religión y la cosmovisión de los pueblos indígenas. Su obra más famosa, La vida cotidiana de los aztecas en vísperas de la conquista española (1955), se convirtió en un referente para comprender la sociedad mexica antes de la llegada de los europeos.

Además de su labor científica, Jacques Soustelle tuvo una importante carrera política. Fue miembro de la resistencia francesa durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial y ocupó cargos gubernamentales, incluyendo el de gobernador general de Argelia. Sus posturas políticas generaron controversias, especialmente durante el proceso de independencia argelina.

A pesar de su actividad política, su legado más duradero pertenece al campo de la antropología. Sus estudios contribuyeron significativamente al conocimiento de las culturas prehispánicas de América y siguen siendo consultados por investigadores de la historia mesoamericana.
