Reseña del libro "Grounded Gallantry (en Inglés)"
Following the formation of the Royal Air Force on 1st April 1918, a decision was made that four awards for the new service would be instituted, namely the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Force Cross for commissioned officers and Warrant Officers, and the Distinguished Flying Medal and the Air Force Medal for other ranks. Prior to this, officers in the Royal Flying Corps were awarded the Military Cross and those in the Royal Naval Air Service were awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for gallantry in the air. The award of the Military Cross to RAF officers was thus limited to gallantry while not on flying operations.Of the 120 men mentioned in this book, nearly half received their Military Crosses for escaping, making repeated attempts to escape or for evading capture after being shot down. The remainder were to men of the RAF Armoured Car squadrons, the RAF Regiment, or for service with ground forces in liaison roles, as medical officers and padres, with the S.O.E., or for other miscellaneous ground roles unconnected with flying. The circumstances and the background of the awards are often extraordinary, and the bravery of the recipients cannot be underestimated. These men are a select group and while some were individual pilots or aircrew others may never have flown, but each in their own way deserves the recognition for their exploits and heroism.
