As digitalization progresses, numerous studies have been conducted to identify new competence requirements. However, only a few have looked at existing skills requirements, which remain particularly relevant in non-routine situations. In non-routine situations, professionals need to mobilize a wealth of knowledge and skills on an ad hoc basis to make decisions quickly and competently. However, due to automation, these knowledge and skills are rarely needed in routine situations and are therefore at risk of being forgotten. The problem has already been researched in high-risk industries with a high degree of automation, but no empirical studies have yet been carried out for chemical or pharmaceutical production. The research project "Competence retention for non-routine activities in digital work environments (KONDITION): studies based on the professions of chemical and pharmaceutical technician", on which this publication is based, aimed to close this gap.
