Unified by themes of presence, absence, the act of looking back, and moving from personal love to collective memory, the poet pairs a collection of love poetry with an elegiac meditation on the fall of Tenochtitlan and the historical trauma underlying modern Mexico City. The poems in ‘Little Colorful Beads’ are the work of a sensibility at once deeply romantic and visually alert, a poet who thinks in images the way a painter thinks in color. The poems in ‘Notes on a Lake That Is No Longer a Lake’ is a collection of moral seriousness, a sustained elegy, a love poem to one of the world's most complex and beautiful cities. What keeps Looking Back from being simply a whiplash between charming love poetry and grim political poetry is its consistent refusal of two easy exits: sentimentality and despair. Looking Back is a gesture that can mean nostalgia, reckoning, vigilance, or grief, and the poet builds his two-part structure so that the phrase accumulates all four meanings by the final page. As a whole, Looking Back stages an argument about what happens when the same capacity for tenderness that falls in love with a woman's face is turned, unflinching, on a wounded city and its five hundred years of history.
