Reseña del libro "Meadow (en Inglés)"

When something goes, something grows.

A book to foster a love of nature. A child explores the natural world outside their door and finds comfort there in a time of grief.

The meadow behind Leif’s house contains a whole secret world. From bumblebees to spittlebugs, earthworms to mushrooms, Leif loves discovering all of its tiny joys and showing their great-grandmother all they find during their weekly visits. When their great-grandmother passes away, Leif and their mother remember her words: “when something goes, something grows.”

A young child shares their love for the meadow behind their house with their great-grandmother and finds comfort there after she passes.

Key Selling Points:

A book to encourage a child’s love of nature, and to open their eyes to what they can find in their own backyard.
A gentle story about a child’s first experience with grief and loss, with the life cycle of animals and plants acting as a helpful entry point. Leif, a non-binary child, finds creative ways to help their ailing great-grandmother experience the world from her long-term care home, through their shared passion for nature. Only after she passes away is Leif able to understand their great-grandmother’s message, “When something goes, something grows.”
A STEM crossover: While The Meadow is primarily a SEL title, it also includes a significant science/nature component, as Leif explores the meadow in their backyard. Leif observes the plants, bugs, and animals they find, and their great-grandmother teaches them about lupins, explaining how lupin seeds develop, take root, and scatter. When Leif finds a dead bird, their mother helps them bury it. A layered conversation starter about mortality.
Illustrator Maggie Zeng uses a combination of watercolors, colored pencils to refine details, and gouache to create opacity. Her methods create the magical world of the meadow and convey the subtlety of the story’s emotions. The details in the illustration encourage children to linger on the page as they look for all the different animals, birds, and flowers within Leif’s favorite meadow.
A loving, intergenerational story full of empathy and care. Leif observes their mother’s grief at the death of their great-grandmother. Even though Leif is also sad, they try to cheer their mother up. They comfort each other, and they plant the lupin seeds together.
This is a personal story to author Sal Sawler, as it was inspired by the death of their grandmother. The Meadow explores death and grief in a way that manages to be comforting without shying away from hard realities by using euphemisms. Sal Sawler felt it was important to address these feelings directly, as it can help normalize them. It also works better for neurodivergent readers who might think more literally.
Similar to Sal Sawler’s previous book, Ellis on Guard, the book features a non-binary child as the main character and does not make their pronouns a focus but rather incidental, just a fact of their identity. This is important to them as an author, as they are also non-binary and use they/them pronouns.
