Twelve years ago, fourteen-year-old Madison Tompkins stepped off her school bus in Manchester, Connecticut-and vanished without a trace.

Now, as cancer closes in, her mother hires Bruce Westman, a private investigator with a reputation for finding what others can't, in a desperate, final attempt to bring her daughter home. Alongside his assistant Laurie-a former Hunts Point prostitute with her own scars-Bruce follows every lead, no matter how dark.

Their search uncovers a shadowy figure known only as "The Cowboy," a child sex trafficker who leaves almost no trace. Following his nearly invisible trail, Bruce and Laurie are pulled deep into the brutal underbelly of human trafficking, all the way to Houston, Texas.
