Pre-vocational education as a pedagogical contribution to guidance in vocational education and training within the world of work and careers, at the interface between career guidance and political education for young people and students in shaping future social relationships. Taking Austria as an example, the study examines preparation for choosing a school or course of study, and subsequently for choosing a career. In the field of adult education, the vocational education mandate of career guidance and further and continuing education is highlighted. Recent developments have emerged from teacher training and the fields of civic education, intercultural competence and adult education. The European Union is reinforcing these efforts through lifelong learning.
