Reseña del libro "THE COMPLETE PUFFERFISH HANDBOOK: A Complete Beginner’s Guide to Choosing, Feeding, Housing, Training, Protecting, and Caring for Freshwater, ... for a Healthy and Successful Aquarium"

Discovering the Remarkable World of Pufferfish Pufferfish belong to one of the most distinctive and captivating groups of fishes found anywhere in the aquatic world. Their rounded bodies, expressive eyes, unusual swimming movements, powerful beak-like teeth, and famous ability to inflate have made them instantly recognisable even to people who know little about fish. Yet the popular image of a small fish suddenly expanding into a ball represents only one part of a far more complex story. Pufferfish are intelligent, adaptable predators whose bodies, behaviour, feeding strategies, and defensive systems have been shaped by millions of years of evolution. They inhabit environments ranging from tropical coral reefs and coastal lagoons to rivers, lakes, estuaries, mangrove systems, and other inland waterways. Some remain tiny enough for carefully planned home aquariums, while others grow into impressive animals requiring exceptionally large and specialised systems. Understanding these differences is the first step towards appreciating pufferfish properly and caring for them responsibly. The name pufferfish is commonly applied to members of the family Tetraodontidae, a group within the order Tetraodontiformes. The family occurs mainly throughout tropical and subtropical regions of the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific oceans, although many species enter or permanently inhabit brackish and freshwater environments. Their broad distribution has produced tremendous diversity in body size, colour, habitat preference, temperament, diet, and environmental requirements. This diversity is important for aquarium keepers because pufferfish cannot be cared for according to one universal set of instructions. A species adapted to an African freshwater river has very different needs from one that lives among Indo-Pacific coral reefs, while a fish naturally associated with estuaries may require increasing salinity as it matures. Correct identification is therefore not simply a matter of curiosity; it determines whether an aquarium can provide suitable water chemistry, space, food, and long-term security. What Makes Pufferfish One of Nature’s Most Extraordinary Fish The most famous feature of a pufferfish is its ability to enlarge its body dramatically when threatened. Inflation functions as a defence against predators by transforming the fish from a relatively manageable prey item into a large, awkward shape that is difficult to swallow. A pufferfish accomplishes this by rapidly drawing water into an expandable stomach, causing the body to swell while its skin stretches around the enlarged form. Inflation is not a performance or a form of entertainment, and responsible keepers should never deliberately frighten a pufferfish to make it expand. The behaviour places considerable stress on the animal and should be viewed as an emergency defence used when the fish believes it is in serious danger.
