The Last Man Standing is a novel composed of more than 170 vignettes; layered like the shards of a kaleidoscope, they offer a constantly shifting, non-linear glimpse into the subtle horrors of a patriarchal family structure, as well as the emotional entanglements and contradictions of family life. Told from the perspective of an unnamed first-person narrator, these textual snapshots revolve around and culminate in the funeral service for the deceased Father, masterfully intertwining life and death, dream and reality, past and present, and memory and imagination. Vivid scenes, images, and recollections of dialogue follow in an almost hypnotic flow. Spare, subtle portrait of a family in pain: proof that fictional experimentation in skilled hands can yield gold. —Kirkus Reviews GEORGE CHAMBERS (1931–2015) was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and served as a sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1951–1954. He graduated with his BA degree from Boston College in 1958 and his MA degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1963. For 42 years, he was a full professor of English at Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois. After his conversion to fiction on October 4, 1968, in Iowa City, Iowa, Chambers authored six books of fiction and poetry and published original creative work in anthologies, books, and literary periodicals. Invisible Starfall Books' GEORGE CHAMBERS EDITION is a book series comprising authoritative new editions of the author's works, supplemented by first editions of previously unpublished manuscripts. Newly edited and with a new design, each book in the GC Edition was produced in close cooperation with The Literary Estate of George Chambers.
