In what way is education outdated? Is there actually an old way of teaching that was effective in the past but not now? The lens of history provides an interesting perspective on this topic. Relying on his experience as a classroom teacher and academic training in history, Putman traces education culture through the pre-modern era and makes a historical comparison between teaching methods of the past to what modern-day experts consider to be effective teaching. What did scholars like Socrates or Saint Augustine have to say about motivating and engaging learners? How would their “old way” of teaching have compared to what is taught by modern-day experts like Carol Ann Tomlinson or Todd Whitaker? The results are surprising.
